2011 PROFILES
Aiden
Aiden was born in a hotel in Nairobi on 8 September 2010 and taken to Kenyatta Hospital because of respiratory distress. He was accompanied to the hospital by a hotel attendant (who declined to give the name of the hotel) and a man who was believed to be the baby’s father (although he later denied to be the child’s biological father and said that he was just boyfriend for a short time and did not know the whereabouts of Aiden's mother. Aiden was admitted to HLCH on 3 December 2010.
Alvin
Alvin was abandoned on 8 April 2011. He was left with another child (who is a class 5 pupil) by a mother who said that she was attending something and then coming back. She never turned up. The matter was then reported to the police Alvin was admitted to HLCH on14 April 2011. Alvin is in good health and about 6 months old.
Andrew
Andrew is approximately 2½ years old. He was found in one of the slums in Nairobi on 8 April 2009. He was taken to Nairobi Children’s Home and has been appearing for press sessions at the court several times, but remains unclaimed. He was admitted to HLCH on 10 November 2009. After a short while at Happy Life Children's Home, it became apparent that he exhibited signs of epilepsy. Andrew has been on medication for a short time now while his progress is observed. He has joined the HLCH pre-school. Though he has a problem concentrating, he has made great improvement.
Angel
Angel was taken to Kasarani Police station by 3 girls on 19 July 2010. They said that she had been abandoned two days earlier and that they could not find her mother. She was about 10 months old. On admission to HLCH, Angel was very withdrawn, although she looked healthy. She is now a very cheerful girl.
Chris
Chris was abandoned on 12 March 2009 at Makongeni Estate in Thika. He
was picked by a good samaritan who took him to Thika District Hospital. He weighed 2.5 kgs. He was admitted at HLCH on 12 May 2009. Chris was suffering with an umbilical hernia and unable to retain food well. He has improved significantly, though he still looks very small for his age. Chris is now a very healthy boy and has started to walk and talk. He loves music and dancing.

Christian
Christian was born at St. Francis Community Hospital Kasarani on 27 November 2010. His mother stayed there for some time since she had not paid the bill. On 16 December, she disappeared leaving the baby behind. Christian was admitted to HLCH on 22 December 2010. He became ill on 27 February of Pneumonia and died on 1 March 2011.
David
David was born at KNH on 24 January 2005. After delivery he was placed at the new born unit as his mother was not in a position to care for him. The social worker at HLCH later tried unsuccessfully to follow up on the whereabouts of his mother. David is 6 years old and attending Mt. View School (class one).
Edwin
Edwin was left by unknown persons in an Eldoret express bus at Machakos Country Bus Terminal. He was taken to Kamukunji Police Station which referred him to Nairobi Children’s Home. (Since Nairobi Children’s Home is a rescue center, children cannot stay there for more than six months; but they are transferred to other homes.) He was transferred to HLCH on 2 August 2010.
Esther
Esther was abandoned in a ditch at Muthurwa estate in Nairobi on 12 March 2010 when she was about 1 month old. A woman named Rosemary reported the case at Muthurwa Police Station. Esther was referred to Nairobi Children’s Home and later transferred to HLCH 2 August 2010. She was one of the babies who was involved in a road accident that day. She suffered a fractured leg, but has recovered nicely. Esther has also had some other health issues (pneumonia and upper respiratory tract infections) since, but she is doing well now.
Faith
Faith was referred to Nairobi Children’s Home as an abandoned child on 26 January 2010. She had been abandoned at a day care centre on 17 July 2010 by a woman. The owner of the day care stayed with Faith
until 26 January. Faith was then transferred to HLCH on 3 June 2011. She is approximately one year old.

Fred
Fred was born on 23 April 2004 as his mother, from Kimilili, Musenwa location, Bungoma District, was on the way to the hospital. His mother was admitted to KNH with the baby and later left him behind in the ward. He was placed at HLCH on 27 May 2004. He is 7 years old

Jacob
Jacob was found abandoned at Park road on 1 June 2010 outside a house gate. The homeowner said that the child was abandoned by an unknown woman who claimed that she wanted to collect a bag at the nearby bus station and failed to return. The case was reported at Pangani Police Station. Jacob, approximately 1 year old, was taken to Nairobi Children’s Home and later transferred to HLCH on August 2010. On the way, he was part of a traffic accident and suffered a fracture to his right leg, but recovered well.
Jeff
Jeff was found abandoned at Githurai 44 on 21 April 2010. He was rescued by a stranger who reported the matter to the Kasarani Police Station. Later that day, he was brought to HLCH. On admission he looked traumatized, dehydrated, and had a very high fever and diarrhea. He was rushed to the hospital and treated for malaria, dehydration, and malnutrition. Jeff is now standing and has improved tremendously.
John
John was abandoned on 19 January 2010 at Marurui Village which is about 3 kms from Happy Life Children's Home. He was about 1 year old. He was helped by a stranger who reported the case to the area chief and then to the police. On admission (21 January 2010), John looked malnourished. He is now a happy, healthy boy.
Jonathan
Jonathan was seen by police officers on 18 April 2008 at a place known as Kenya Kiiru village of Baricho division Kirinyaga district. The police took him to Kerugoya district hospital. He was placed at HLCH on 8 May 2008, but was taken to the hospital two weeks later suffering from menengitis which was at its tertiary stage. Now, Jonathan is now doing well.
Joshua
Joshua is approximately 3½ years old. He was found in Nairobi by himself on 23 January 2008. He was taken to Nairobi Children’s Home and has been appearing for press sessions at the court several times, but remains unclaimed. He was admitted to HLCH on 10 November 2009. Joshua has really improved even in his class. We are believing God to get a school for him next year.
Kevin
Kevin was found abandoned at the gate of Jackline Nyaata on 9th May 2006 (at Kinoo in Nairobi) who reported the case to the police. He was then taken to KNH and diagnosed with severe malnutrition, anemia and rickets. He was about 18 months old and weighed 5.6 kg. He was admitted at HLCH on 11 July 2006. Kevin is 6years old, in class one at Mt. View school.
Larry
Larry was abandoned on 9 May 2010 outside the gate at Kasarani. His rescuer reported the case to Kasarani Police Station. There was a small bag beside him with some clothes and the birth notification which showed that he had been born at Ruiru Subdistrict Hospital on 26 April 2010. Larry is doing well and is healthy.
Leah
Leah was admitted at HLCH on 16 January 2007. Her father was 66 years old had stayed with her for 6 months in very poor conditions. Her mother died after delivery. Leah will be given back to her father when he is in a position to take care of her. Leah has a brother (Daniel) and a sister (Mother).
Leo
Leo was abandoned at Thika District Hospital on 14 February, 2010 shortly after birth. The matter was reported to the police who have been unable to find Leo's mother. He was admitted to HLCH on 31 March 2010. He had been sick for some time, but recovered and was doing very well. Leo got sick on 6 August 2011 and died the next day of pulmonary pneumonia.
Loise
Loise was left by her mother one month after delivery in the care of her father. She was taken to Nairobi Children’s Home. Her father never re-appeared and efforts to trace him are futile. Loise was brought to HLCH on 14 January 2005 from Nairobi Children’s Home. Loise does not have the required documents so that she can be adopted. She is now 7 years old is in class one.
Luc
Luc was born at Kenyatta Hospital on 25 August 2010 and was admitted to the new born unit because of his low birth weight (1500 grams). Luc’s mother was admitted to the general ward but absconded on 27
August leaving the baby behind. Luc was admitted to HLCH on 3 December 2010 and is in good health.

Melvin
Melvin’s mother had rented a room on 28
May 2010 in a hotel in Nairobi where she left Melvin together with his 8-year-old sibling. The incident was reported to the police and their mother was arrested and charged. Melvin was later placed at Nairobi Children’s Home and then transferred to HLCH on 3 June 2011. Melvin is about one year old.

Nadia
Nadia was found abandoned on 29 August 2010. Her mother (a young street girl) left the baby (about one week old) at the area chief’s office and ran away. Efforts to trace her were unsuccessful. She was taken to Rescue Dada Children’s Home and then referred to HLCH. Nadia was one of the children who were very sick with Rotavirus outbreak, but she has recovered and doing very well.
Patience
Patience was abandoned at Kerugoya district hospital at the outpatient department on 4 February 2008. She was placed at Happy Life Children's Home on 8 May 2008. Patience could have been adopted already, but we have not gotten the last release letters from the police. We are still following up and hope to get the release letters soon. Petience is now 3½ years old.
Richard
Richard was admitted to HLCH on 13 July when he was about 3 days old. According to the police report, Richard had been stolen by a woman who is the mother of two girls. She had pretended to be pregnant by putting rags on her stomach. After investigations, it was discovered that she did not give birth to Richard, but rather stole him from a woman whose identity is not known. The police are now looking for the mother of Richard and the other woman is in custody.
Tando
Tando was born on 21June 2010 with a low birth weight of 1700 grams as one of twin boys. His mother left with the other son leaving Tando at Kenyatta National Hospital. Someone who claimed to be his father visited him several times at the hospital and said that he was raising some money for the bill, but later disappeared without any trace. Tando was admitted to HLCH on 4 March 2011.
