Our Vision
- From the inception of Happy Life Children’s Home, our vision has been to provide a home where abandoned babies could receive loving care and have the hope for adoption.
- We believe that God’s original plan for humans was to live together in families. Sadly, many terrible and tragic events have created in Kenya, and most of Africa, a climate where the abandonment of newborn babies is increasingly common.
- In times past, children who became abandoned in the African society were taken in by the extended family or tribal community. Since this is increasingly no longer the case, the Church is being called to proclaim the message of adoption and to promote adoption among its members and friends. It is the desire of Happy Life Children's Home to work closely with the local churches in Kenya and around the world to this end.
Our Mission
- To bring a home and hope for adoption to the abandoned children of Kenya
- To act with the care, conviction, and responsibility of a loving parent with these children
- To work with local authorities, hospitals, and social services for the welfare of each child
- To promote the adoption option in Kenya and throughout the world
Our Goals
- To provide the children with quality caregivers who love them well
- To meet the physical, social, emotional, and educational needs of each child
- To create a “family” atmosphere for the children within HLCH
- To match each child with a loving family for adoption
- To enlist the support and resources of others who also value this work
Our History
- Fall 2000: Rev. Jim Powell, the Associate Pastor of Heritage Presbyterian Church in New Castle, DE, and Steve Kamau, a Kenyan who was a member of Heritage, presented their idea to open a home for abandoned babies in Kenya to the officers of Heritage Church.
- July 2001: With the approval from Heritage Church, Pastor Jim, his wife Sharon, and Steve visited Nairobi to explore the implementation of their vision.
- January 2002: Happy Life Children’s Home began under the direction of Pastor Peter Ndungu in Kenya and under the oversight of Heritage Presbyterian Church in New Castle, Delaware. The Lord blessed us with our first four children (picture at left): Twin boys (who were found less that a week old in a plastic and who are now happily adopted in the USA!), another boy (who was returned to his parents), and a girl (also returned to her parents).
- Fall 2004: Happy Life Children's Home received its official 501c(3) non-profit status. ( Tax ID: 30-0277253). In Kenya, Happy Life is registered under Pastor Ndungu’s Church, Overcoming Faith Ministries.
- Winter 2007: The facility for HLCH from the own who had enabled us to set up a rent-to-own arrangement over several years.
- Since the beginning, more than 25 abandoned children have been adopted into forever families living in Germany, Holland, Austrailia, the United States, and Kenya. More than 40 are currently somewhere in the adoption process. Many others are waiting with hope.
- Two committees now oversee the operations of the HLCH. Pastor Peter Ndungu is the Director of the Board in Kenya and Pastor Jim Powell is the Director of the Board in the United States.
Children are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from Him.
